German GDP grows 0.2% in first quarter, beats estimates
Gross domestic product, adjusted for calendar and seasonal effects, rose 0.2% from the fourth quarter, the Federal Statistics Office, Destatis, said Wednesday. Most economists expected a decline of 0.1% quarter-on-quarter.Compared with the year-earlier period, Germany's price- and calendar-adjusted GDP grew 1.6%, exceeding market expectations of 1.2%.Also, Germany's fourth-quarter GDP growth was revised upward to 0.2% quarter-on-quarter, Destatis said."It's a recovery, not stagnation," said Carsten Brzeski, senior economist at ING Belgium, in a note to clients. "The strong March figures came right in time to make an almost lost quarter look somewhat better.""Looking ahead, the recent spring revival bodes well for the second quarter. All indicators signal a strong rebound," Brzeski said.Ken Wattret, an analyst at BNP Paribas, said that Germany's harsh winter was a drag on activity in the construction sector, an effect that will reverse in the second quarter, boosting growth.Second-quarter "data should be much stronger, which will reinforce our forecast that Germany will outperform the euro zone going forward," Wattret wrote in a note.

For Microsoft, Office is the real cash cow. Except in years when Microsoft launches a new operating system, it is Office that generates most of the firm's profits through corporate licensing deals.
But a lot has changed since the last launch of the US software giant's office software package - with Word for text processing, Outlook for e-mail, Powerpoint for presentations, and corporate mainstay Excel for spreadsheets (plus a range of other applications).

Microsoft's biggest weapon, though, argues Forrester's Sheri McLeish is "familiarity", which "can not be underestimated".
Most people just know how to use Office - although that's true only to a point. With Office 2007, Microsoft introduced a new top-level navigation, a so-called ribbon of commands relevant in the context of what you were working on.
What seemed like a good idea turned out to be a major irritation for most. Microsoft has not given up on the concept, though, and rolled out the ribbon across all Office applications, including their online versions.

A third of big enterprises plan to upgrade to Sharepoint 2010 within a year, and that in turn will drive the corporate success of the Office 2010, says Forrester.
While "for the broad masses it's going to be a slow transition" to the new Office suite, "for businesses, I'm bullish for the product," she says.
Into the cloud
Of course, Sharepoint is not the only collaboration tool around. Plenty of companies - including Google - offer applications, tools and databases online.
It's called "cloud computing", but even here Microsoft has the advantage that companies still live overwhelmingly in a Microsoft world.
"The cloud story is coming together for Microsoft, and Office 2010 is a key part of that," says Per-Olof Schroeder.
And while most consumers will be perfectly happy with the limited features of Docs.com, Mr Schroeder predicts that companies will find themselves in "a lot of scenarios that require much more advanced capabilities" - in other words a fully paid-up version of Office 2010.
The software
So does Microsoft meet its online/offline promises?
Docs.com is still in "beta", an invitation-only service with plenty of software bugs.
The user interface has a clear, clean look that will make most Office users feel at home. The workflow - where to click, in which order - still needs improving.
But Microsoft is clearly very close to delivering a strong challenger to Google Docs, especially when Docs.com is combined with Skydrive, Microsoft's free 25 Gigabyte online storage service.
The Office 2010 software itself runs faster than its predecessor and sports many clever improvements (my favourite: a meeting invitation sent to Outlook automatically shows whether it can fit in the diary or not).

My work is described as follows:1. We characterize the standardized sleep mode in IEEE 802.16e. When you travel by car or train a blurred image of the countryside constantly smears the windows. Car drivers, in particular, are forever obsessed with the urge to go on and on: they never want to stop. Is it the lure of the great motorways, or what? And as for sea travel, it hardly deserves mention. It is perfectly summed up in the words of the old song: ‘I joined the navy to see the world, and what did I see? I saw the sea.’ The typical twentieth-century traveler is the man who always says ‘I’ve been there. ’ You mention the remotest, most evocative place-names in the world like El Dorado, Kabul, Irkutsk and someone is bound to say ‘I’ve been there’ – meaning, ‘I drove through it at 100 miles an hour on the way to somewhere else. ’
When you travel at high speeds, the present means nothing: you live mainly in the future because you spend most of your time looking forward to arriving at some other place. But actual arrival, when it is achieved, is meaningless. You want to move on again. By traveling like this, you suspend all experience; the present ceases to be a reality: you might just as well be dead. The traveler on foot, on the other hand, lives constantly in the present. For him traveling and arriving are one and the same thing: he arrives somewhere with every step he makes. He experiences the present moment with his eyes, his ears and the whole of his body. At the end of his journey he feels a delicious physical weariness. He knows that sound. Satisfying sleep will be his: the just reward of all true travellers.

I saw boys driving away to war
in a Ratel-90 armoured car
and they were well trained,
ready for action
and called up for military service
against their will.
Two smiled and a few
waved goodbye
and there was dirt
in my eyes,
when my armoured car
caught speed.
Enemy battle tanks were everywhere
and we fought right through the night
and with first light
an armoured car was stuck
in a mine field
and they were hoping for the best
but the worst was there
and shot out they paid the cost.
Although the enemy
paid a much higher price
and lost,
it’s like yesterday that they
waved goodbye
and sacrificed in vain
their lives for people
that does not honour them
and remain forever young.
Exploration of the Titanic
After resting on the ocean floor, split asunder and rusting, for nearly three-quarters of a century, a great ship seemed to cone alive again. The saga of the White Star liner Titanic, which struck an iceberg and sank on its maiden voyage in 1912, carrying more than 1,500 passengers to their death, has been celebrated in print and on film, in poetry and song. But last week what had been legendary suddenly became real. As they viewed videotapes and photographs of the sunken leviathan, millions of people around the world could sense her mass, her eerie quiet and the ruined splendor of a lost age.
Watching on television, they vicariously joined the undersea craft Alvin and Jason Jr. (J.J.) as they toured the wreckage of the luxury liner, wandering across the decks past corroded bollards, peering into the officer’s quarters and through rust-curtained portholes. Views of the railings where doomed passengers and crewmembers stood evoked images of the moonless night 74years ago when the great ship slipped beneath the waves.
The two-minute videotape and nine photographs, all in color and shot 12,500ft.under the North Atlantic, were a tiny sample of 60 hours of video and 60,000 stills garnered during the twelve-day exploration. They are released at a Washington press conference conducted by Marine Geologist Robert Ballard, 44, who led the teams from the Wood Hole Oceanographic Institution that found the Titanic last September and revisited it this July.
Recounting the highlights of what has already become the most celebrated feat of underwater exploration, Ballard revealed some startling new information. His deep-diving craft failed to find the 300-ft. gash that, according to legend, was torn in the Titanic’s hull when the ship plowed into the iceberg. Instead, he suggested, the collision had buckled the ship’s plates, allowing water to pour in. He also brought back evidence that the ship broke apart not when she hit bottom, as he had thought when viewing the first Titanic images last September, but as she sank: the stern, which settled on the bottom almost 1,800ft. from the bow, had swiveled 180 on its way down.
